1、Chinatowns 2019/11/9

摘要:Gregor Benton is one of the foremost scholars of China in the world. Chinatowns is a highly readable, and sweeping book on this global phenomenon, including a photo essay of historical snapshots of Chinatowns across the globe. The Chinese diaspora, which started a couple of centuries ago, produced Chinatowns from the US to Britain to Europe to Southeast Asia to Australia. Exploring how each Chinatown is different; Benton explains how a unique culture developed and outlines their basic cultural, social, and political features. He highlights the unique features of the different Chinatowns surveyed. For instance, in Paris, there is a Chinatown populated primarily by Chinese who are the descendants of Chinese migrants to Southeast Asia (a former French colony). In the United States, the cloistered nature of Chinatowns stemmed from institutionalized racism. And in Australia, weaker taboos against interracial sex led to more open enclaves. Everywhere, though, Chinatowns have been stereotyped as places of exoticism and corruption, and to this day are frequently viewed through an Orientalist gaze. In this truly unique book, Gregor Benton applies his vast knowledge to cover all of these features.

2、A Special Standing in the World - A History of the Faculty of Law at The University of Hong Kong(香港大學法律學院史) 2019/11/1

摘要:The Faculty of Law at the University of Hong Kong is one of the cornerstones of the rule of law in Hong Kong. Established in 1969, when Hong Kong was little more than a colonial 『legal backwater』, the Faculty has contributed widely to the transformation of Hong Kong into a flourishing and dynamic jurisdiction under 『one country, two systems』, in which Hong Kong maintains its freedoms and its common law system as a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China. The Faculty has been instrumental in fostering a legal profession firmly rooted in Hong Kong and able to function bilingually in Chinese and English, a vital feature of Hong Kong’s modern legal system. Its graduates now make up over half of Hong Kong’s legal profession and over half of the Judiciary. Its teachers have played a key part in modernizing the law and establishing Hong Kong law as a field of scholarship. The Faculty is now a centre of research in a wide range of fields, from public law and human rights to financial law and comparative Chinese law. The history of the Faculty is therefore in many ways the history of the law and the legal profession in modern Hong Kong. Published to mark the Faculty’s 50th anniversary in 2019, this book traces the history of the Faculty from its origins as a small Department of Law to its present position as one of the world’s leading law schools. Drawing on archival materials, published sources, and interviews with teachers and alumni, the book explores the history of the Faculty in the context of Hong Kong’s recent legal, political, and social history. The first two chapters examine the Faculty’s long prehistory when, for over a hundred years, most of Hong Kong’s lawyers had to go to England for their training. The remaining six chapters deal alternately with the internal history of the Faculty and its impact on the development of law during the most recent, often turbulent, fifty years of Hong Kong’s history.

3、Feeling the Past in Seventeenth-Century China 2019/10/15

摘要:During the Manchu conquest of China (1640s–1680s), the Qing government mandated that male subjects shave their hair following the Manchu style. It was a directive that brought the physical body front and center as the locus of authority and control. Feeling the Past in Seventeenth-Century China highlights the central role played by the body in writers』 memories of lived experiences during the Ming-Qing cataclysm. For traditional Chinese men of letters, the body was an anchor of sensory perceptions and emotions. Sight, sound, taste, and touch configured ordinary experiences next to traumatic events, unveiling how writers participated in an actual and imagined community of like-minded literary men. In literature from this period, the body symbolizes the process by which individual memories transform into historical knowledge that can be transmitted across generations. The ailing body interprets the Manchu presence as an epidemic to which Chinese civilization is not immune. The bleeding body, cast as an aesthetic figure, helps succeeding generations internalize knowledge inherited from survivors of dynastic conquest as a way of locating themselves in collective remembrance. This embodied experience of the past reveals literature’s mission of remembrance as, first and foremost, a moral endeavor in which literary men serve as architects of cultural continuity.

4、Negotiating Inseparability in China - The Xinjiang Class and the Dynamics of Uyghur Identity(在中國協商團結:新疆班與維吾爾族身份認同的變動) 2019/10/1

摘要:This is the first book-length study of graduates from the Xinjiang Class, a program that funds senior high school–aged students from Xinjiang, mostly ethnic Uyghur, to attend a four-year course in predominately Han-populated cities in eastern and coastal China. Based on longitudinal field research, Negotiating Inseparability in China: The Xinjiang Class and the Dynamics of Uyghur Identity offers a detailed picture of the multilayered identities of contemporary Uyghur youth and an assessment of the effectiveness of this program in meeting its political goals. The experiences of Xinjiang Class graduates reveal how young, educated Uyghurs strategically and selectively embrace elements of the corporate Chinese Zhonghua minzu identity in order to stretch the boundaries of a nonstate-defined Uyghur identity. Timothy Grose also argues that the impositions of Chinese Mandarin and secular Chinese Communist Party (CCP) values over ethnic minority languages and religion, and physically displacing young Uyghurs from their neighbourhood and cultural environment do not lead to ethnic assimilation, as the CCP apparently expects. Despite pressure from state authorities to urge Xinjiang Class graduates to return after their formal education, the majority of the graduates choose to remain in inner China or to use their Xinjiang Class education as a springboard to seek global citizenship based upon membership in a transnational Islamic community. For those who return to Xinjiang, contrary to the political goal of the program, few intend to serve the CCP, their country, or even their hometown. Instead, their homecomings are marred by disappointment, frustration, and discontent.

5、The Long March 1934–35: The Rise of Mao and the Beginning of Modern China 2019/9/17

摘要:This study tells the epic story of how a routed group of Chinse Communists marched tens of thousands of miles with Mao on a journey that would lead to their eventual triumph and rule of the whole of China. Every nation has its founding myth, and for modern China it is the Long March. In the autumn of 1934, the Chinese Nationalists under Chiang Kai-shek routed the Chinese Communists and some 80,000 men, women, and children left their homes to walk with Mao Zedong into the unknown. Mao's force had to endure starvation, harsh climates, and challenging terrain whilst under constant aerial bombardment and threatened by daily skirmishes. The Long March survivors had to cross 24 rivers and 18 mountain ranges, through freezing snow and disease-ridden wilderness to reach their safe-haven of Yan'an. In military terms, the Long March was the longest continuous march in the history of warfare and it came as a terrible cost--after one year, 6,000 miles, and countless battles, fewer than 4,000 of the original marchers were left. Illustrated with stunning full-color artwork, this enthralling book tells the full story this epic display of resilience, and shows how, from the desert plateau of Yan'an, these survivors would grow the army that conquered China 14 years on, changing history forever.

6、The Unworthy Scholar from Pingjiang: Republican-Era Martial Arts Fiction 2019/9/3

摘要:Xiang Kairan, who wrote under the pen name 「The Unworthy Scholar from Pingjiang,」 is remembered as the father of modern Chinese martial arts fiction, one of the most distinctive forms of twentieth-century Chinese culture and the inspiration for China’s globally popular martial arts cinema. In this book, John Christopher Hamm shows how Xiang Kairan’s work and career offer a new lens on the transformations of fiction and popular culture in early twentieth-century China. The Unworthy Scholar from Pingjiang situates Xiang Kairan’s career in the larger contexts of Republican-era China’s publishing industry, literary debates, and political and social history. Writing at a time when writers associated with the New Culture movement promoted an aggressively modernizing vision of literature, Xiang Kairan consciously cultivated his debt to homegrown narrative traditions. Through careful readings of Xiang Kairan’s work, Hamm demonstrates that his writings, far from being the formally fossilized and ideologically regressive relics their critics denounced, represent a creative engagement with contemporary social and political currents and the demands and possibilities of an emerging cultural marketplace. Hamm takes martial arts fiction beyond the confines of genre studies to situate it within a broader reexamination of Chinese literary modernity. The first monograph on Xiang Kairan’s fiction in any language, The Unworthy Scholar from Pingjiang rewrites the history of early-twentieth-century Chinese literature from the standpoints of genre fiction and commercial publishing.

7、Emperor Qianlong’s Hidden Treasures - Reconsidering the Collection of the Qing Imperial Household(乾隆秘寶:清宮收藏的再思考) 2019/9/1

摘要:In this stunning reassessment, Nicole T. C. Chiang argues that the famous Qianlong art collection is really 『the collection of the imperial household in the Qianlong reign』. The distinction is significant because it strips away the modern, Eurocentric preconceptions that have led scholars to misconstrue the size of the collection, the role of nationalism in its formation, the distinction between art and artifact, and the actual involvement of the emperor in assembling the collection. No one interested in Chinese art will be able to ignore the ramifications of this important study. Emperor Qianlong’s Hidden Treasures: Reconsidering the Collection of the Qing Imperial Household argues that the size of the collection was actually smaller than previously stated. Moreover, the idea that the collection put the whole of the empire on display (and thereby promoted political unity) does not square with the reality that most of the collection was hidden away. Instead, the collection was primarily for the emperor’s gaze alone. Chiang further explains that the collection was largely the product of work done by many specialists working at the Qianlong court, noting that the emperor often assumed a more supervisory role. Preliminary drawings, patterns, models, and prototypes of the items made in the imperial workshops also formed an important part of the collection, as they served to establish standardized models used to run the imperial household. The collection was thus both broader and narrower than previously stated.

8、The Origins of the Modern World: A Global and Environmental Narrative from the Fifteenth to the Twenty-First Century (Fourth Edition) 2019/7/15

摘要:This clearly written and engrossing book presents a global narrative of the origins of the modern world from 1400 to the present. Unlike most studies, which assume that the 「rise of the West」 is the story of the coming of the modern world, this history, drawing upon new scholarship on Asia, Africa, and the New World and upon the maturing field of environmental history, constructs a story in which those parts of the world play major roles, including their impacts on the environment. Robert B. Marks defines the modern world as one marked by industry, the nation state, interstate warfare, a large and growing gap between the wealthiest and poorest parts of the world, increasing inequality within the wealthiest industrialized countries, and an escape from the environmental constraints of the 「biological old regime.」 He explains its origins by emphasizing contingencies (such as the conquest of the New World); the broad comparability of the most advanced regions in China, India, and Europe; the reasons why England was able to escape from common ecological constraints facing all of those regions by the eighteenth century; a conjuncture of human and natural forces that solidified a gap between the industrialized and non-industrialized parts of the world; the mounting environmental crisis that defines the modern world; and the ways in which the forces of globalization stress the economic and political underpinnings of the modern world. Now in a new edition that brings the saga of the modern world to the present in an environmental context, the book considers how and why the United States emerged as a world power in the twentieth century and became the sole superpower by the twenty-first century, and why the changed relationship of humans to the environmental likely will be the hallmark of the modern era—the Anthopocene. Once again arguing that the US rise to global hegemon was contingent, not inevitable, Marks also points to the resurgence of Asia and the vastly changed relationship of humans to the environment that may in the long run overshadow any political and economic milestones of the past hundred years.

11、Poetic TransformationsEighteenth-Century Cultural Projects on the Mekong Plains 2019/6/10

摘要:In the eighteenth century, multiple migratory groups with competing political ambitions converged on the Mekong plains. In the frontier region, literati‐officials of a territorially-expanding Vietnamese state crossed paths with a network of diasporic Chinese Ming loyalists closely affiliated with the coastal trading network. Drawing on vernacular Vietnamese and classical Chinese sources, Claudine Ang identifies the different ways two leading statesmen of the time employed literature to transform the frontier region. In their rival cultural projects, we see the clash between the aspirations of Vietnamese and Chinese migrants. Ang shows how a bawdy play, in which a lascivious monk turns his charms on an unsuspecting nun, acted as a vehicle for differentiating Vietnamese lowlanders from their neighbors, and she uncovers in a suite of landscape poems coded messages aimed at founding a new Ming loyalist stronghold on the Mekong delta. Through its close reading of satirical drama and landscape poetry, Poetic Transformations captures a historical moment of overlapping visions, frustrated schemes, and contested desires on the Mekong plains.

12、Dispute Resolution in China: Litigation, Arbitration, Mediation and their Cross-Interactions 2019/6/1

摘要:In recent years, the Chinese legal system on civil litigation, arbitration and mediation, including their respective laws, regulations, and legal institutions, has undergone many changes. These reforms include, for example, three rounds of Reform Plans of the People’s Courts (1998-2013), amendments to the Civil Procedure Law in 2007 and 2012, revisions to rules of China’s flagship arbitration institution, the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), in 2005 and 2012, and promulgation of the People’s Mediation Law in 2010. This book focuses on the law and development of these three major dispute resolution mechanisms in China, examining the design and legal framework of civil litigation, arbitration and mediation, their operations, challenges, and past-decade reforms. It also explores the wider contextual factors (political, economic, and societal) that led to these developments and looks at the possible obstacles to further development, for civil justice reform in particular and rule-of-law in general. By examining up-to-date literatures while exploring answers to the academic inquiries, this book provides a thorough analysis of the dynamic contemporary Chinese system of dispute resolution that has on the one hand blended Chinese traditions, socioeconomic and sociopolitical realities, guanxi culture and foreign experience, and has on the other hand developed distinctively to respond to China’s market and societal transitions. This book will be an invaluable reference tool for students, scholars and practitioners with an interest in Chinese law, dispute resolution, and broader economic and political dimensions of dispute resolution development in China.

15、China in AustralasiaCultural Diplomacy and Chinese Arts since the Cold War, 1st Edition 2019/5/31

摘要:Drawing on expertise in art history, exhibition studies and cultural studies as well as politics and international relations, China in Australasia presents significant new perspectives on the role of art in the cultural diplomacy of the People’s Republic of China. The book tells the forgotten story of the loan, exchange, and gifting of Chinese art, museum exhibitions—and the use of Chinese arts more broadly—in growing diplomatic relations with Australia and New Zealand, from 1949 to the present day. Its scope includes pre-modern, modern and contemporary sculpture, painting and peasant art, as well as ancient artefacts, performance arts and gardens. In considering the geopolitical connections opened by the arts, this book presents new insights into some of the ways in which China, often in conjunction with local supporters, sought to present itself to the people of Australia and New Zealand. It also considers how, for their part, New Zealanders and Australians worked to expand understandings of their powerful northern neighbour within changing political contexts. The first of its kind, this book-length interdisciplinary study of Chinese soft diplomacy in Australasia will be invaluable to students and scholars of Chinese studies, cultural diplomacy, museum studies and art history.

17、That Distant Country Next Door: Popular Japanese Perceptions of Mao’s China 2019/5/1

摘要:Japan’s road to war in China in the 1930s–1940s is well known, as are the legacies of that conflict in the diplomatic disputes, territorial rows, and educational policy battles between Japan and China since the 1980s. Less understood is the nature of Japan-China relations in the intervening decades. How did a popular Japanese perception of China that facilitated imperial aggression become one that embraced restoring friendly diplomatic ties and cultivating mutually beneficial economic and cultural interactions? Exploring everyday Japanese impressions of the People’s Republic of China from the end of the U.S. Occupation in 1952 to normalization of Japan-China relations in 1972, this book analyzes representations of the PRC in Japanese print media and visual culture in connection with four topics: the 1954 visit to Japan by Minister of Health Li Dequan, China’s atomic weapons testing in 1964–1967, the Red Guard movement of the early Cultural Revolution years, and the culture of continental 「rediscovery」 in 1971–1972. Japanese views of China under Mao were infused with elements of thematic and conceptual continuity linking the prewar, wartime, and postwar eras. In sketching out a portrait of these elements, Erik Esselstrom explains how the reconstruction of Japan’s relationship with China included more than just the trials and tribulations of Cold War diplomacy. In so doing, he reintegrates postwar Japan-China relations within the longer history of East Asian cultural interaction and engagement.

18、中國行政壟斷的法理—如何達致合法合理 Legality and Reasonableness of Administrative Monopoly in China 2019/5/1
