5、Poetic TransformationsEighteenth-Century Cultural Projects on the Mekong Plains 2019/6/10

摘要:In the eighteenth century, multiple migratory groups with competing political ambitions converged on the Mekong plains. In the frontier region, literati‐officials of a territorially-expanding Vietnamese state crossed paths with a network of diasporic Chinese Ming loyalists closely affiliated with the coastal trading network. Drawing on vernacular Vietnamese and classical Chinese sources, Claudine Ang identifies the different ways two leading statesmen of the time employed literature to transform the frontier region. In their rival cultural projects, we see the clash between the aspirations of Vietnamese and Chinese migrants. Ang shows how a bawdy play, in which a lascivious monk turns his charms on an unsuspecting nun, acted as a vehicle for differentiating Vietnamese lowlanders from their neighbors, and she uncovers in a suite of landscape poems coded messages aimed at founding a new Ming loyalist stronghold on the Mekong delta. Through its close reading of satirical drama and landscape poetry, Poetic Transformations captures a historical moment of overlapping visions, frustrated schemes, and contested desires on the Mekong plains.

7、Dispute Resolution in China: Litigation, Arbitration, Mediation and their Cross-Interactions 2019/6/1

摘要:In recent years, the Chinese legal system on civil litigation, arbitration and mediation, including their respective laws, regulations, and legal institutions, has undergone many changes. These reforms include, for example, three rounds of Reform Plans of the People’s Courts (1998-2013), amendments to the Civil Procedure Law in 2007 and 2012, revisions to rules of China’s flagship arbitration institution, the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), in 2005 and 2012, and promulgation of the People’s Mediation Law in 2010. This book focuses on the law and development of these three major dispute resolution mechanisms in China, examining the design and legal framework of civil litigation, arbitration and mediation, their operations, challenges, and past-decade reforms. It also explores the wider contextual factors (political, economic, and societal) that led to these developments and looks at the possible obstacles to further development, for civil justice reform in particular and rule-of-law in general. By examining up-to-date literatures while exploring answers to the academic inquiries, this book provides a thorough analysis of the dynamic contemporary Chinese system of dispute resolution that has on the one hand blended Chinese traditions, socioeconomic and sociopolitical realities, guanxi culture and foreign experience, and has on the other hand developed distinctively to respond to China’s market and societal transitions. This book will be an invaluable reference tool for students, scholars and practitioners with an interest in Chinese law, dispute resolution, and broader economic and political dimensions of dispute resolution development in China.

8、Encounters with Emotions: Negotiating Cultural Differences since Early Modernity 2019/6/1

摘要:Spanning Europe, Asia and the Pacific, Encounters with Emotions investigates experiences of face-to-face transcultural encounters from the seventeenth century to the present and the emotional dynamics that helped to shape them. Each of the case studies collected here investigate some of the most fascinating historiographical questions that arise from the study of emotion, from the strategies people have used to interpret and understand each other’s emotions to the roles that emotion has played in obstructing communication across cultural divides. Together, they explore the cultural aspects of nature and the bodily dimensions of nurture in order to trace the historical trajectories that shape our understandings of current cultural boundaries and effects of globalization.

9、China in AustralasiaCultural Diplomacy and Chinese Arts since the Cold War, 1st Edition 2019/5/31

摘要:Drawing on expertise in art history, exhibition studies and cultural studies as well as politics and international relations, China in Australasia presents significant new perspectives on the role of art in the cultural diplomacy of the People’s Republic of China. The book tells the forgotten story of the loan, exchange, and gifting of Chinese art, museum exhibitions—and the use of Chinese arts more broadly—in growing diplomatic relations with Australia and New Zealand, from 1949 to the present day. Its scope includes pre-modern, modern and contemporary sculpture, painting and peasant art, as well as ancient artefacts, performance arts and gardens. In considering the geopolitical connections opened by the arts, this book presents new insights into some of the ways in which China, often in conjunction with local supporters, sought to present itself to the people of Australia and New Zealand. It also considers how, for their part, New Zealanders and Australians worked to expand understandings of their powerful northern neighbour within changing political contexts. The first of its kind, this book-length interdisciplinary study of Chinese soft diplomacy in Australasia will be invaluable to students and scholars of Chinese studies, cultural diplomacy, museum studies and art history.

10、Halfway to Freedom of InformationThe Legislative and Judicial Protection of the Right of Access to Information in China, 1st Edition 2019/5/15

摘要:A right of access to information (ATI) was introduced to China in 2007, creating uncertain hopes that freedom of information may flourish in this party-state with ingrained traditions of secrecy. This book is the first comprehensive assessment of the law and enforcement relating to Chinese citizens』 ATI right. It reviews the labyrinth of Chinese laws that bear on government information disclosure, and examines the judicial treatment of the ATI right based on a survey of over 400 representative lawsuits. It especially investigates the extent to which the ATI right has been protected - by laws in book and laws in action - to enable the citizenry to monitor and check the government. A wide range of materials, including statutory and other normative documents, court decisions, news reports and statistics, is meticulously collected and examined. An assessment methodology, which combines empirical study, legal realist observation and doctrinal analysis, is designed to accommodate the characteristics of China’s judicial system. This book not only contributes rich sources and fresh approaches to the research on freedom of information, but also sheds new light on the role of Chinese courts in affecting the outcomes of political reforms that respond to mounting social demands for government accountability.

11、Strait Rituals: China, Taiwan, and the United States in the Taiwan Strait Crises, 1954–1958 (海峽儀式:中國、台灣、美國和台海危機,1954-1958) 2019/4/30

摘要:The two Taiwan Strait crises took place during a particularly tense period of the Cold War. Although each incident was relatively brief, their consequences loom large. Based on analyses of newly available documents from Beijing, Taipei, and Washington, Pang Yang Huei challenges conventional wisdom that claims Sino-US misperceptions of each other’s strategic concerns were critical in the 1950s. He underscores the fact that Washington, Taipei, and Beijing were actually aware of one another’s strategic intentions during the crises. He also demonstrates conclusively that both 「crises」 can be understood as a transformation from tacit communication to tacit accommodation. An important contribution of this study is a better understanding of the role of ritual, symbols, and gestures in international relations. While it is true that these two crises resulted in a stalemate, the fact that all parties were able to cultivate talks and negotiations brought relations, especially between the US and China, to a new and more stable level. Simply averting the threat of war was a major achievement. Strait Rituals is an important micro-history of a significant moment during the Cold War and a rich interpretation of the theoretical use of multiple points of view in writing history. It sets a new standard for understanding China’s place in the world.

12、The Assassin: Hou Hsiao-hsien’s World of Tang China (刺客聶隱娘:侯孝賢的大唐中國) 2019/4/30

摘要:The Assassin tells the story of a swordswoman who refrains from killing. Hou Hsiao-hsien astonishes his audience once again by upsetting almost every convention of the wuxia (martial arts) genre in the film. This collection offers eleven readings, each as original and thought-provoking as the film itself, beginning with one given by the director himself. Contributors analyze the elliptical way of storytelling, Hou’s adaptation of the source text (a tale from the Tang dynasty, also included in this volume), the film’s appropriation of traditional Chinese visual aesthetics, as well as the concept of xia (knight-errant) that is embedded in Confucian, Daoist, and Buddhist worldviews. There are also discussions of the much-celebrated sonic design of The Assassin: the nearly exclusive use of a diegetic film score is a statement on the director’s belief in cinematic reality. Underlying all the chapters is a focus on how Hou reinvents Tang-dynasty China in contemporary culture. The meticulously recreated everyday reality of the Tang world in the film highlights the ethnic and cultural diversity of the dynasty. It was a time when Sogdian traders acted as important intermediaries between Central Asia and the Tang court, and as a result Sogdian culture permeated the society. Taking note of the vibrant hybridity of Tang culture in the film, this volume shows that the historical openness to non-Chinese elements is in fact an essential part of the Chineseness expressed in Hou’s work. The Assassin is a gateway to the remote Tang-dynasty world, but in Hou’s hands the concerns of that premodern world turn out to be highly relevant to the world of the audience.

13、Peri-Urban ChinaLand Use, Growth and Integrated Urban Rural Development, 1st Edition 2019/4/29

摘要:The urban-rural relationship in China is key to a sustainable global future. This book is particularly interested in peri-urbanization in China, the process by which fringe areas of cities develop. Recent institutional change has helped clarify property rights over collective land, facilitating peri-urban area development. Chapters in this book explore how rural industrialization has changed the landscape and rules about land use in peri-urban areas. It looks at the role of rural industrialization and provides a detailed exploration of peri-urbanization theory, policy and its evolution in China. Leading discussions find out how fragmented bottom-up industrialization, urbanization and lax governance have led to a series of social and environmental problems. The progress in redevelopment of peri-urban areas was initially slow due to the spatial lock-in effect. This book offers practical solutions to environmental issues and explains how policy makers have the potential to redevelop a future collaborative, inclusive and sustainable approach to peri-urban areas. This in-depth approach to urbanization will be useful to academics in urban planning and governmental organizations. It will also be advantageous to NGOs and professionals involved in urban planning, public administration, as well as land use work in China and other developing countries.

15、China, India and Alternative Asian Modernities1st Edition 2019/4/19

摘要:The conception of modernity as a radical rupture from the past runs parallel to the conception of Europe as the primary locus of global history. The essays in this volume contest the temporal and spatial divisions—between past and present, modernity and tradition, and Europe’s progress and Asia’s stasis—which the conventional narrative of modernity creates. Drawing on early modern Chinese and Indian history and culture instead, the authors of the book explore the provenance of modernity beyond the west to see it in a transcultural and pluralistic light. The central argument of this volume is that modernity does not have a singular core or essence—a causal centre. Its key features need to be disaggregated and new configurations and combinations imagined. By studying the Bhakti movement, Confucian democracy, and the maritime and agrarian economies of China and India, this book enlarges the terms of debate and revisits devalued terms and concepts like tradition, religion, authority, and rural as resources for modernity. This book will be of great interest to researchers and academicians working in the areas of history, Sociology, Cultural Studies, literature, geopolitics, South Asian and East Asian Studies.

17、An Anthology of the Twentieth Century Chinese Drama 2019/4/8

摘要:This book collects eleven plays from different periods in the 20th century China, which in its totality reflects the changes and development of modern Chinese drama from its very beginning. The Main Event in Life, a play that Hu Shi wrote in imitation of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, is the first Chinese play written in modern vernacular and dealing with the problem of women’s freedom. Yama Zhao by Hong Shen and The Night the Tiger Was Captured by Tian Han are representative of the earlier achievements of Chinese playwrights in nationalizing and localizing modern drama in China. Cao Yu, who wrote such well-known plays as Thunderstorm, Sunrise, Wilderness and Peking Man, brought modern Chinese drama to its maturity in the 1930s and 1940s. Under Shanghai Eaves and Teahouse are new and significant fruits of the Chinese realistic drama in the middle of the century. The Red Lantern, however, is one of the revolutionary model plays, which dominated Chinese theatre during the Great Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). Since the 1980s, there have been active experiments and extensive borrowings of Western drama, which resulted in greater diversity in both content and form in contemporary Chinese theatre. The last four plays in the anthology are evidences of that.

18、Legal Protection of Private Equity Investors in ChinaPractice, Challenges and Reform, 1st Edition 2019/3/29

摘要:This monograph aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the legal protection of the private equity (PE) investors in China. In an academic sense, this research mainly focuses on the agency problems in the life cycle of PE investment under the business organization law system in China. Briefly speaking, the agency problems of PE investment derive from the two-level separation of ownership and control, one of which is the principal–agent relationship between the PE investors and the fund manager, and the other is the principal–agent relationship between the PE shareholders and the management of investee companies. It is the first research to provide an in-depth examination on the investor protection in the PE investment under the business organization law system in China.

19、The Principal's Graduation: My Heartfelt Words 2019/3/26

摘要:Putting the admirable rationales of university education into practice is never easy. While it is popular to emphasize market values and competitive rankings, moral values and ideals sound way too lofty nowadays. Facing tensions on campus and in society, the head of a university takes the role of striking a balance as skillfully as possible. Joseph Sung is no exception to all these challenges during his tenure as the seventh vice chancellor and president of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). In this book, he discusses higher education and social responsibility, pathways and choices our youths make, the visions he had and the challenges he faced, and life values which he wishes his students could take seriously.

20、Salon Salon: Fine Art Practices from 1972 to 1982 in Profile – A Beijing Perspective 2019/3/26

摘要:Salon Salon unfolds a narrative about Beijing’s art scene in the decade from the late Cultural Revolution to the beginning of the Reform and Opening-up period. It focuses on the continuous influence of the ideological structure of socialist realism in China on the practice and discourse of contemporary Chinese art. Key themes include the possibility for individuals to strive for room for creative practice under harsh political circumstances; how political signals and collective unconscious actions measured up against each other and marched forward hand in hand; and the collective oblivion of the young generation and their 「natural inheritance」 of past experiences in major social movements.
