2、International Business: An Asian Perspective 2021/1/8

摘要:The book is one of the very few texts on international business with a focus on Asia. It discusses how Western business practices and strategies could be modified to suit diverse socio-cultural, political as well as the economic realities of Asia. In most Asian countries including China, Japan, Korea, India, and ASEAN countries, the market structure is shaped and regulated not only by market competition but also by government policy. The influence of government in business is significant. The book explains how the government influences business and how successful local and foreign companies are adapting to various government influences. The book also includes many examples of localization strategies to suit the particular local needs of Asian consumers. Asian consumer attitudes and behaviors are often influenced not only by individual needs and wants but also by various groups such as family, peers, and reference groups that one wants to associate with. A deep understanding on how those groups influence Asian consumers would be important for marketing success. The book modifies the Western consumer behavior model in Asia, and discusses how firms can develop their market entry strategies in Asian markets, using many real examples. It also expands the Western strategy models such as Porter’s five forces model and the resource-based view of the firm with the Asian context. The book also focuses on foreign subsidiaries operating in the Asian market as well as Asian firms and includes both prescriptive conceptual models and descriptive short cases to understand the business environment and successful business strategies in Asia. It’s a refreshing take on international business.

3、Clean Energy Urban Design: The Energy Proforma in Policy and Practice 2021/1/7

摘要:Clean Energy Urban Design: The Energy Proforma in Practice and Policy offers a new way of understanding urban energy consumption in fast growing China by asking a simple question: How does the design of neighborhoods affect energy consumption? Four years of research—including interviews of 4,500 families and statistical modeling of their energy usage—led MIT researchers Dennis Frenchman and Chris Zegras to conclude that people living in better-designed neighborhoods will consume less energy in their daily patterns of life. Frenchman and Zegras take their findings a step further by making the results of their work accessible to the public through the online Energy Proforma © [http://energyproforma.mit.edu] a tool that allows designers, policymakers and the rest of us to rapidly assess the comprehensive energy performance of a neighborhood while it is being designed (or after it is built). The Proforma provides the basis for design and policy recommendations included in the book, as well as illustrative neighborhood designs developed using the Proforma in the test city of Jinan, China.Clean Energy Urban Design: The Energy Proforma in Practice and Policy is a visionary yet highly practical approach to developing more sustainable low-carbon cities, one neighborhood at a time.

4、The Brics in a Changing International System: Emerging Structures of Global Governance 2020/12/24

摘要:The accelerated growth of the economies of Brazil, China, India and Russia illustrates that a significant change in the distribution of global economic power is under way, and this volume provides a succinct and comprehensive guide to this important group of nations. The book seeks to highlight the main objectives and organizational features of the BRICS group including the driving forces behind its creation as well as those that currently hold it together. By analysing the BRICS significance and effectiveness in the international arena, the volume explains the group’s relative success despite the tensions and divergent interests in the bilateral relations of its members as well as their differences regarding their collective role in the changing international system. It then moves on to evaluate the future of the BRICS as a group examining its future challenges, arguing that by resisting institutionalisation and privileging flexiblity over binding arrangements, the group will continue to prosper. This work will be essential reading for students of international organisations, emerging markets, the BRICS and international relations in general.

5、Muslims on the Edge of China : Religious Knowledge and Authority Amongst the Uyghurs of Xinjiang 2020/12/2

摘要:The vast desert region dividing China from Central Asia, now known officially as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR), has gained considerable international profile in recent years as an area that combines geo-political and economic significance with ethnic and religious sensitivity. The focus on Xinjiang's key role as a "crossroads of trade" following the opening up of borders with neighbouring states has been accompanied by growing interest in continued ethnic unrest on the part of the Muslim Turkic-speaking Uyghurs. In recent years, Chinese government authorities have sought to depict Uyghur separatist activity as being linked to "illegal religious activities" and religious extremism and have accelerated efforts to bring religious activity under the auspices of state control. In the post-9/11 context, the Chinese authorities have explicitly linked their struggle against Uyghur separatism to the global "war on terror", prompting accusations that China is deliberately using the current international climate to justify a clampdown on civil and religious liberties. This book fills a gap in the literature by offering a detailed understanding of how Islam is enacted on the ground. Based on long-term anthropological fieldwork, the author explores the interplay between state policies and the enactment of religion at the local level. The book thus analyses the complex connection between state efforts to co-opt, supervise and repress certain modes of religion and the emergence of new religious ideologies seeking to establish more "orthodox" forms of religious conduct, whose priorities sometimes correspond but more usually conflict with this wider state agenda. The book furthers the readers' knowledge of the religion in the region. It will be of interest to scholars of Chinese and Islamic studies as well as to political scientists.

6、On the New Silk Road : Journeying through China's Artery of Power 2020/12/1

摘要:The Silk Road once served as the vital artery of the ancient world, connecting China to societies across Eurasia and providing immense wealth and prestige. Now an ascendant China is attempting to restore its place at the centre of global trade through one of the most ambitious projects of modern times. This `New Silk Road' will use rail lines, highways, pipelines and shipping routes across China, Russia, the Middle East and Central Asia, unifying a region that has been contested for millennia. Having travelled the length and breadth of the future `Road', from its planned starting point in Xi'an, China, to its outer reaches in Western Europe, Wade Shepard provides an absorbing account of China's efforts to make the New Silk Road a reality. He reveals its implications for the world as a whole, and argues that the Road represents the focal point of China's plans for an alternative economic order, which it hopes will rival or even surpass that of the West. On the New Silk Road is the essential account of a crucial turning point in the history of Asia, and of the world.

12、Maoism: A Global History 2019/9/3

摘要:Since the heyday of Mao Zedong, there has never been a more crucial time to understand Maosim. Although to Western eyes it seems that China has long abandoned the utopian turmoil of Maoism in favour of authoritarian capitalism, Mao and his ideas remain central to the People』 Republic and the legitimacy of its communist government. As disagreements and conflicts between China and the West are likely to mount, the need to understand the political legacy of Mao will only become more urgent. Yet during Mao’s lifetime and beyond, the power and appeal of Maoism has always extended beyond China. Across the globe, Maoism was a crucial motor of the Cold War: it shaped the course of the Vietnam War (and the international youth rebellion it triggered) and brought to power the murderous Khmer Rouge in Cambodia; it aided, and sometimes handed victory to, anti-colonial resistance movements in Africa; it inspired terrorism in Germany and Italy, and wars and insurgencies in Peru, India and Nepal, some of which are still with us today – more than forty years after the death of Mao. In this new history, acclaimed historian Julia Lovell revaluates Maoism, analysing both China’s engagement with the movement and its legacy on a global canvas. It’s a story that takes us from the tea plantations of north India to the sierras of the Andes, from Paris’s 5th Arrondissement to the fields of Tanzania, from the rice paddies of Cambodia to the terraces of Brixton. Starting from the movement’s birth in northwest China in the 1930s and unfolding right up to its present-day violent rebirth, this is the definitive history of global Maoism.

13、Work Safety Regulation in China: How the CCP's fatality quotas are cleansing China's blood-soaked GDP 2019/8/25

摘要:Fatality quotas implemented in China’s industrial sector are being used to promote work safety and therefore, reducing the number of work-related deaths. Given the controversial nature of this policy, Gao analyzes how the fatality quotas are functioning to aid the country in balancing economic growth and social stability. The book also examines significant implications caused of this policy’s implementation in the local regions, and reveals how local officials attempt to handle these problems. This is the first book to systematically examine the role of death indicators in work safety improvement in contemporary China, revealing insight into Beijing’s quota-oriented approach to policy-making.

16、A History of Cultic Images in China: The Domestic Statuary of Hunan 2019/7/9

摘要:In the past twenty years, work on the local culture of central Hunan has been one of the most exciting sources for rethinking the nature and variety of Chinese local society. At the heart of this society is a kind of statuary found nowhere else in China—sculpted images of local people, primarily religious specialists of a wide range, but also parents and ancestors who, according to Confucian orthodoxy, should be represented by tablets, not statues. While the consecration ceremonies of these statues include rites that are common to all China, they are embedded in unique local ritual traditions. Based on two decades of international collaborative research, Alain Arrault focuses on some 4,000 of these statues and studies them on the basis of consecration certificates inserted in the statues, the earliest of which date to the sixteenth century.

18、Model Workers in China, 1949-1965Constructing A New Citizen, 1st Edition 2019/7/2

摘要:Seismic changes in ideology and economic policy in China followed the death of Mao Zedong but one aspect of culture that has remained constant. The use of 『Model Workers』 in both a political and commercial context continues to thrive in China and although the messages they promote have largely changed, their continued use indicates the extent to which they are believed to be an effective form of persuasion. Model Workers were deployed at key points in China’s recent history and served to embody the Party’s vision of the ideal Chinese citizen as they attempted to reshape the nation following a, 『century of humiliation,』 a ruinous war with Japan and a divisive civil war.

19、Becoming Guanyin: Artistic Devotion of Buddhist Women in Late Imperial China 2019/7

摘要:The goddess Guanyin began in India as the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, originally a male deity. He gradually became indigenized as a female deity in China over the span of nearly a millennium. By the Ming (1358–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) periods, Guanyin had become the most popular female deity in China. In Becoming Guanyin, Yuhang Li examines how lay Buddhist women in late imperial China forged a connection with the subject of their devotion, arguing that women used their own bodies to echo that of Guanyin. Li focuses on the power of material things to enable women to access religious experience and transcendence. In particular, she examines how secular Buddhist women expressed mimetic devotion and pursued religious salvation through creative depictions of Guanyin in different media such as painting and embroidery and through bodily portrayals of the deity using jewelry and dance. These material displays expressed a worldview that differed from yet fit within the Confucian patriarchal system. Attending to the fabrication and use of 「women’s things」 by secular women, Li offers new insight into the relationships between worshipped and worshipper in Buddhist practice. Combining empirical research with theoretical insights from both art history and Buddhist studies, Becoming Guanyin is a field-changing analysis that reveals the interplay among material culture, religion, and their gendered transformations.

20、Japan’s Cold War Policy Toward ChinaTwo Perceptions of Order, 1st Edition 2019/6/30

摘要:During the period 1960-1972, particularly in East Asia, Cold War international politics saw significant change from a bipolar structure, centring on the United States and Soviet Union, to a more complicated situation. After the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, Washington and Moscow accelerated the détente process, leading China to perceive a "collusion" of the two superpowers. Publically attacking its former ally while continuing to fight against the US, China rose as a symbol of multipolarization in international politics during the 1960s. Focusing on Japan’s policy towards China, Kanda examines what sort of perceptions of the international order Japanese leaders had and how they reacted to this changing international environment. This books expands beyond the traditional Euro-centric view of the Cold War, emphasizing the significant role Japan played in Asia. It also provides insight into the foreign policy patterns of post-World War 2 Japanese diplomacy particularly in relation to China and the Soviet Union. It’s historical is based on thorough analysis of archival records from Japan, China, Taiwan, the US, the UK, Australia and the UN, as well as published diplomatic documents from France and Germany, and personal papers, diaries and memoirs of those involved.
