109、The Yellow Croaker War: Fishery Disputes between China and Japan, 1925-1935

摘要:Beginning in the 1920s, the convergence of ecological transformations that originated in China and Japan gave rise to protracted disputes over yellow croaker fishing grounds off of China's southeast coast. These conflicts highlight the importance of transnational perspectives in marine environmental history. Geopolitics influenced patterns of marine resource exploitation, as Japan's diplomatic and military advantage prevented the Chinese government from excluding the Japanese fleet from yellow croaker fishing grounds. Motivated by a mutual understanding of fishery expansion as a way to strengthen the nation-state, Chinese and Japanese exploitation hastened the decline of yellow croaker resources by the late 1930s.

118、Fisheries Build Up the Nation : Maritime Environmental Encounters between Japan and China

摘要:This chapter examines the environmental dimensions of Japan's role in the formation of Chinese modernity. The influence of modern Japanese conceptions of the sea and its resources dates back to the Meiji period (1868-1912), when Chinese students in Japan gained exposure to the discipline of fisheries management. After returning to China following their studies in Japan, Japanese-trained Chinese fisheries experts applied this understanding of the marine environment to their own country's fisheries. Echoing their Japanese counterparts, Chinese reformers invoked fisheries management to uphold the nation's sovereignty against looming foreign threats. This chapter explores how fisheries management in Meiji Japan was framed as a thoroughly modern and progressive endeavor. It also discusses the Japanese origins of modern fisheries management in China and how Japan acted as the inspiration for Chinese fisheries reforms throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Finally, it considers the persistence of Japanese influence in China's fisheries after 1949.
