摘要:“大野泽—梁山泊”作为黄河下游曾经存在的巨浸大泽,在一千多年的时间里与郡县地理沿革、河渠沟洫变迁、漕运水利建设、屯垦括地等问题都息息相关,又长期以“盗区”知名,所以引起古人格外的关注。从宋元到明清,该湖泊的由来与消亡是历代史地学者必定论及的问题。宋人“梁山泊古大野泽”之说在后世著述中被广泛征引,表明古人认识到了大野泽与梁山泊作为同一湖泊的不同阶段,彼此存在承继关系;但因缺乏自然地理学科背景,传统著述对“大野泽—梁山泊”的具体演迁解释得非常模糊。民国以来的学术界取得了一些进展,但也未超出沿革地理的视域。本文尝试以现代历史地理学方法,对“大野泽—梁山泊”在公元12世纪末之前的演迁史进行研究。

摘要:In this paper, I will explore the process by which news and newspaper articles became a recognised source for Chinese encyclopaedic works of new knowledge in the late nineteenth century. At first sight, the assumption itself seems self-contradictory: we commonly think of newspapers and encyclopaedias as serving different purposes, as being manufactured under different premises, and as produced by different social actors. While we assume that journalists produce quick ephemeral news to be sold on a daily basis, encyclopaedists produce standardised and sustainable summaries of up-to-date learning. In times of rapid change, these might even serve as introductory reference works for a new order of knowledge or a new educational system. Again, while publishers of newspapers or encyclopaedias pursue similar goals—marketing information for the purpose of educating the common people—their understanding of how to achieve this differs fundamentally. In order to provide the latest information, but also to overcome the numbing reiteration of certain standardized statements, newspapers produce and disseminate new knowledge daily. Encyclopaedists, however, seem to aim for the exact opposite, namely to standardise the most recent knowledge and turn it into a canon authorised by either secular or religious authorities.

19,974、Peony transplanted: Pai Hsien-yung and the preservation of Chinese Kunqu

摘要:This dissertation examines the preservation of Chinese kunqu, one of China’s indigenous operatic genres, in recent years with a special focus on renowned writer Pai Hsien-yung’s new adaptation of classic kunqu play The Peony Pavilion (Mudan ting). I use this adaptation as a case study to demonstrate how the actual shape of a stage production can be determined by a producer’s choice between tradition and innovation. The contention between the two variables can be identified in the hundreds of years of kunqu history. The introduction provides a brief overview of the ascension of kunqu to its dominance as a national opera between late Ming and early Qing dynasties (late sixteenth century to early nineteenth century). The first two chapters analyze the downfall of this genre and its struggle for existence and development from mid-Qing through the turbulent twentieth century with particular emphasis on exploring the interplay between tradition and innovation. The next two chapters focus entirely on Pai Hsien-yung’s stage production of Peony and its wide distribution. The last chapter examines the latest kunqu production modes developed under the influence of Pai’s approach. Through this detailed analysis of Pai’s kunqu production and its impact, this research identifies one of the most prominent trends in kunqu preservation and development in the twenty-first century. It explores the dialectical approach adopted in this trend to handle the relationship between tradition and innovation, and the particular redefinition of audience construction. A renewed wave of kunqu preservation efforts within China during the past decade created a favourable environment for Pai’s productions. The success of his works has drawn new attention to the opera and eased kunqu crisis to a fairly large extent. 19,975、Study of Wang Tao’s (1828-1897) Manyou suilu and Fusang youji with reference to Late Qing Chinese foreign travel

摘要:Traditionally, Chinese regarded China as the centre of the world, displaying little interest in foreign lands. Before the 1840s, although there were records of a few brave pilgrims traveling to huge distances, Chinese travel literature was dominated by essays and diaries written about the natural scenery of China. In the late Qing, a period of transformation during which Chinese society was challenged by the West and later Japan, Chinese intellectuals, realizing China’s weakness, traveled to these countries in search of remedies for the state. The resulted burgeoning travel literature contains not only firsthand information of the West and Japan at the time, but also details about individual responses to the foreign lands they visited. Despite the relatively small amount of research done on these writings, they are, indeed, the most significant archival materials for the study of the early perceptions of the Chinese of the West in the modern period. Among these travelers, Wang Tao (1828-1897) is certainly worthy of discussion. Apart from being a reform pioneer, Wang Tao was also being pioneering to be the first intellectual to travel to Europe and Japan. His two travelogues, Manyou suilu and Fusang youji, however, have only been used as references in biographical research, neglecting the fact that they consist of not only unprecedented journeys of a Chinese intellectual, but also Wang’s constant evaluations of home politics, of which he carefully laid out in the form of travelogue. This dissertation aims to explore the two travelogues, and is particularly concerned of their relationship with the historic context, the author’s motives of writing and other foreign travel writings of the time. The two travelogues stand out both in subject maters and the subtle ways Wang (re)constructed Europe and Japan. They can be seen as a manifesto of Wang’s views on himself, China and the world.
