8、Regional Literature and the Transmission of Culture: Chinese Drum Ballads, 1800-1937 2019/12/17

摘要:Regional Literature and the Transmission of Culture provides a richly textured picture of cultural transmission in the Qing and early Republican eras. Drum ballad texts (guci) evoke one of the most popular performance traditions of their day, a practice that flourished in North China. Study of these narratives opens up surprising new perspectives on vital topics in Chinese literature and history: the creation of regional cultural identities and their relation to a central 「Chinese culture」; the relationship between oral and written cultures; the transmission of legal knowledge and popular ideals of justice; and the impact of the changing technology of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries on the reproduction and dissemination of popular texts. Margaret B. Wan maps the dissemination over time and space of two legends of wise judges; their journey through oral, written, and visual media reveals a fascinating but overlooked world of 「popular」 literature. While drum ballads form a distinctively regional literature, lithography in early twentieth-century Shanghai drew them into national markets. The new paradigm this book offers will interest scholars of cultural history, literature, book culture, legal history, and popular culture.

9、Orthodox Passions: Narrating Filial Love during the High Qing 2019/12/3

摘要:In this groundbreaking interdisciplinary study, Maram Epstein identifies filial piety as the dominant expression of love in Qing dynasty texts. At a time when Manchu regulations made chastity the primary metaphor for obedience and social duty, filial discourse increasingly embraced the dramatic and passionate excesses associated with late-Ming chastity narratives. Qing texts, especially those from the Jiangnan region, celebrate modes of filial piety that conflicted with the interests of the patriarchal family and the state. Analyzing filial narratives from a wide range of primary texts, including local gazetteers, autobiographical and biographical nianpu records, and fiction, Epstein shows the diversity of acts constituting exemplary filial piety. This context, Orthodox Passions argues, enables a radical rereading of the great novel of manners The Story of the Stone (ca. 1760), whose absence of filial affections and themes make it an outlier in the eighteenth-century sentimental landscape. By decentering romantic feeling as the dominant expression of love during the High Qing, Orthodox Passions calls for a new understanding of the affective landscape of late imperial China.

10、Chinatowns 2019/11/9

摘要:Gregor Benton is one of the foremost scholars of China in the world. Chinatowns is a highly readable, and sweeping book on this global phenomenon, including a photo essay of historical snapshots of Chinatowns across the globe. The Chinese diaspora, which started a couple of centuries ago, produced Chinatowns from the US to Britain to Europe to Southeast Asia to Australia. Exploring how each Chinatown is different; Benton explains how a unique culture developed and outlines their basic cultural, social, and political features. He highlights the unique features of the different Chinatowns surveyed. For instance, in Paris, there is a Chinatown populated primarily by Chinese who are the descendants of Chinese migrants to Southeast Asia (a former French colony). In the United States, the cloistered nature of Chinatowns stemmed from institutionalized racism. And in Australia, weaker taboos against interracial sex led to more open enclaves. Everywhere, though, Chinatowns have been stereotyped as places of exoticism and corruption, and to this day are frequently viewed through an Orientalist gaze. In this truly unique book, Gregor Benton applies his vast knowledge to cover all of these features.

11、Remapping the Sinophone- The Cultural Production of Chinese-Language Cinema in Singapore and Malaya before and during the Cold War(重繪華語語系版圖:冷戰前後新馬華語電影的文化生產) 2019/11/1

摘要:In a work that will force scholars to re-evaluate how they approach Sinophone studies, Wai-Siam Hee demonstrates that many of the major issues raised by contemporary Sinophone studies were already hotly debated in the popular culture surrounding Chinese-language films made in Singapore and Malaya during the Cold War. Despite the high political stakes, the feature films, propaganda films, newsreels, documentaries, newspaper articles, memoirs, and other published materials of the time dealt in sophisticated ways with issues some mistakenly believe are only modern concerns. In the process, the book offers an alternative history to the often taken-for-granted versions of film and national history that sanction anything relating to the Malayan Communist Party during the early period of independence in the region as anti-nationalist. Drawing exhaustively on material from Asian, European, and North American archives, the author does not minimize the complexities produced by British colonialism and anti-communism, identity struggles of the Chinese Malayans, American anti-communism, and transnational Sinophone cultural interactions. Hee shows how Sinophone multilingualism and the role of the local, in addition to other theoretical problems, were both illustrated and practised in Cold War Sinophone cinema. Remapping the Sinophone: The Cultural Production of Chinese-Language Cinema in Singapore and Malaya before and during the Cold War deftly shows how contemporary Sinophone studies can only move forward by looking backwards.

13、A Special Standing in the World - A History of the Faculty of Law at The University of Hong Kong(香港大學法律學院史) 2019/11/1

摘要:The Faculty of Law at the University of Hong Kong is one of the cornerstones of the rule of law in Hong Kong. Established in 1969, when Hong Kong was little more than a colonial 『legal backwater』, the Faculty has contributed widely to the transformation of Hong Kong into a flourishing and dynamic jurisdiction under 『one country, two systems』, in which Hong Kong maintains its freedoms and its common law system as a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China. The Faculty has been instrumental in fostering a legal profession firmly rooted in Hong Kong and able to function bilingually in Chinese and English, a vital feature of Hong Kong’s modern legal system. Its graduates now make up over half of Hong Kong’s legal profession and over half of the Judiciary. Its teachers have played a key part in modernizing the law and establishing Hong Kong law as a field of scholarship. The Faculty is now a centre of research in a wide range of fields, from public law and human rights to financial law and comparative Chinese law. The history of the Faculty is therefore in many ways the history of the law and the legal profession in modern Hong Kong. Published to mark the Faculty’s 50th anniversary in 2019, this book traces the history of the Faculty from its origins as a small Department of Law to its present position as one of the world’s leading law schools. Drawing on archival materials, published sources, and interviews with teachers and alumni, the book explores the history of the Faculty in the context of Hong Kong’s recent legal, political, and social history. The first two chapters examine the Faculty’s long prehistory when, for over a hundred years, most of Hong Kong’s lawyers had to go to England for their training. The remaining six chapters deal alternately with the internal history of the Faculty and its impact on the development of law during the most recent, often turbulent, fifty years of Hong Kong’s history.

14、Feeling the Past in Seventeenth-Century China 2019/10/15

摘要:During the Manchu conquest of China (1640s–1680s), the Qing government mandated that male subjects shave their hair following the Manchu style. It was a directive that brought the physical body front and center as the locus of authority and control. Feeling the Past in Seventeenth-Century China highlights the central role played by the body in writers』 memories of lived experiences during the Ming-Qing cataclysm. For traditional Chinese men of letters, the body was an anchor of sensory perceptions and emotions. Sight, sound, taste, and touch configured ordinary experiences next to traumatic events, unveiling how writers participated in an actual and imagined community of like-minded literary men. In literature from this period, the body symbolizes the process by which individual memories transform into historical knowledge that can be transmitted across generations. The ailing body interprets the Manchu presence as an epidemic to which Chinese civilization is not immune. The bleeding body, cast as an aesthetic figure, helps succeeding generations internalize knowledge inherited from survivors of dynastic conquest as a way of locating themselves in collective remembrance. This embodied experience of the past reveals literature’s mission of remembrance as, first and foremost, a moral endeavor in which literary men serve as architects of cultural continuity.

20、Negotiating Inseparability in China - The Xinjiang Class and the Dynamics of Uyghur Identity(在中國協商團結:新疆班與維吾爾族身份認同的變動) 2019/10/1

摘要:This is the first book-length study of graduates from the Xinjiang Class, a program that funds senior high school–aged students from Xinjiang, mostly ethnic Uyghur, to attend a four-year course in predominately Han-populated cities in eastern and coastal China. Based on longitudinal field research, Negotiating Inseparability in China: The Xinjiang Class and the Dynamics of Uyghur Identity offers a detailed picture of the multilayered identities of contemporary Uyghur youth and an assessment of the effectiveness of this program in meeting its political goals. The experiences of Xinjiang Class graduates reveal how young, educated Uyghurs strategically and selectively embrace elements of the corporate Chinese Zhonghua minzu identity in order to stretch the boundaries of a nonstate-defined Uyghur identity. Timothy Grose also argues that the impositions of Chinese Mandarin and secular Chinese Communist Party (CCP) values over ethnic minority languages and religion, and physically displacing young Uyghurs from their neighbourhood and cultural environment do not lead to ethnic assimilation, as the CCP apparently expects. Despite pressure from state authorities to urge Xinjiang Class graduates to return after their formal education, the majority of the graduates choose to remain in inner China or to use their Xinjiang Class education as a springboard to seek global citizenship based upon membership in a transnational Islamic community. For those who return to Xinjiang, contrary to the political goal of the program, few intend to serve the CCP, their country, or even their hometown. Instead, their homecomings are marred by disappointment, frustration, and discontent.
