22、The Long March 1934–35: The Rise of Mao and the Beginning of Modern China 2019/9/17

摘要:This study tells the epic story of how a routed group of Chinse Communists marched tens of thousands of miles with Mao on a journey that would lead to their eventual triumph and rule of the whole of China. Every nation has its founding myth, and for modern China it is the Long March. In the autumn of 1934, the Chinese Nationalists under Chiang Kai-shek routed the Chinese Communists and some 80,000 men, women, and children left their homes to walk with Mao Zedong into the unknown. Mao's force had to endure starvation, harsh climates, and challenging terrain whilst under constant aerial bombardment and threatened by daily skirmishes. The Long March survivors had to cross 24 rivers and 18 mountain ranges, through freezing snow and disease-ridden wilderness to reach their safe-haven of Yan'an. In military terms, the Long March was the longest continuous march in the history of warfare and it came as a terrible cost--after one year, 6,000 miles, and countless battles, fewer than 4,000 of the original marchers were left. 23、The Unworthy Scholar from Pingjiang: Republican-Era Martial Arts Fiction 2019/9/3

摘要:Xiang Kairan, who wrote under the pen name 「The Unworthy Scholar from Pingjiang,」 is remembered as the father of modern Chinese martial arts fiction, one of the most distinctive forms of twentieth-century Chinese culture and the inspiration for China’s globally popular martial arts cinema. In this book, John Christopher Hamm shows how Xiang Kairan’s work and career offer a new lens on the transformations of fiction and popular culture in early twentieth-century China. The Unworthy Scholar from Pingjiang situates Xiang Kairan’s career in the larger contexts of Republican-era China’s publishing industry, literary debates, and political and social history. Writing at a time when writers associated with the New Culture movement promoted an aggressively modernizing vision of literature, Xiang Kairan consciously cultivated his debt to homegrown narrative traditions. Through careful readings of Xiang Kairan’s work, Hamm demonstrates that his writings, far from being the formally fossilized and ideologically regressive relics their critics denounced, represent a creative engagement with contemporary social and political currents and the demands and possibilities of an emerging cultural marketplace. Hamm takes martial arts fiction beyond the confines of genre studies to situate it within a broader reexamination of Chinese literary modernity. The first monograph on Xiang Kairan’s fiction in any language, The Unworthy Scholar from Pingjiang rewrites the history of early-twentieth-century Chinese literature from the standpoints of genre fiction and commercial publishing.

24、Emperor Qianlong’s Hidden Treasures - Reconsidering the Collection of the Qing Imperial Household(乾隆秘寶:清宮收藏的再思考) 2019/9/1

摘要:In this stunning reassessment, Nicole T. C. Chiang argues that the famous Qianlong art collection is really 『the collection of the imperial household in the Qianlong reign』. The distinction is significant because it strips away the modern, Eurocentric preconceptions that have led scholars to misconstrue the size of the collection, the role of nationalism in its formation, the distinction between art and artifact, and the actual involvement of the emperor in assembling the collection. No one interested in Chinese art will be able to ignore the ramifications of this important study. Emperor Qianlong’s Hidden Treasures: Reconsidering the Collection of the Qing Imperial Household argues that the size of the collection was actually smaller than previously stated. Moreover, the idea that the collection put the whole of the empire on display (and thereby promoted political unity) does not square with the reality that most of the collection was hidden away. Instead, the collection was primarily for the emperor’s gaze alone. Chiang further explains that the collection was largely the product of work done by many specialists working at the Qianlong court, noting that the emperor often assumed a more supervisory role. Preliminary drawings, patterns, models, and prototypes of the items made in the imperial workshops also formed an important part of the collection, as they served to establish standardized models used to run the imperial household. The collection was thus both broader and narrower than previously stated.

31、中国近代书刊形态变迁研究 2019/8

摘要:晚清民国时期,中国书刊从传统形制转向现代形制。形态的变迁,不只是对印刷技术的运用与匹配,也是国人在时空重设后对民族文化意义思考在书刊形态上的呈现,因为书刊形态的塑造也是把一种意义注入于一种形式的过程。因此,书稿尝试以符号学的角度整合技术、设计、社会文化、观念之间的关系, 书稿分成五个部分。第一章是技术角度的讨论;第二章是设计角度的讨论;第三章是书刊文化意义的分析;第四章是对设计理念发展的分析;第五章是现代性探索。设计现代性是书稿关注的重点。近代的书刊形态探索成果就是得出'民族性是现代性的必然结果'这一结论。无论哪个阶层引领的文化转型,都是对符号表意进行反思之后的重构,这里既包括精英文化阶层代表者鲁迅等的贡献,也包括被之前被书装史忽略的大众文化阶层代表包天笑等的探索。

32、The Origins of the Modern World: A Global and Environmental Narrative from the Fifteenth to the Twenty-First Century (Fourth Edition) 2019/7/15

摘要:This clearly written and engrossing book presents a global narrative of the origins of the modern world from 1400 to the present. Unlike most studies, which assume that the 「rise of the West」 is the story of the coming of the modern world, this history, drawing upon new scholarship on Asia, Africa, and the New World and upon the maturing field of environmental history, constructs a story in which those parts of the world play major roles, including their impacts on the environment. Robert B. Marks defines the modern world as one marked by industry, the nation state, interstate warfare, a large and growing gap between the wealthiest and poorest parts of the world, increasing inequality within the wealthiest industrialized countries, and an escape from the environmental constraints of the 「biological old regime.」 He explains its origins by emphasizing contingencies (such as the conquest of the New World); the broad comparability of the most advanced regions in China, India, and Europe; the reasons why England was able to escape from common ecological constraints facing all of those regions by the eighteenth century; a conjuncture of human and natural forces that solidified a gap between the industrialized and non-industrialized parts of the world; the mounting environmental crisis that defines the modern world; and the ways in which the forces of globalization stress the economic and political underpinnings of the modern world. Now in a new edition that brings the saga of the modern world to the present in an environmental context, the book considers how and why the United States emerged as a world power in the twentieth century and became the sole superpower by the twenty-first century, and why the changed relationship of humans to the environmental likely will be the hallmark of the modern era—the Anthopocene. Once again arguing that the US rise to global hegemon was contingent, not inevitable, Marks also points to the resurgence of Asia and the vastly changed relationship of humans to the environment that may in the long run overshadow any political and economic milestones of the past hundred years.

摘要:1914年春,浙江設通志局編修浙江續通志,延聘清末著名學者沈增植為總編纂,黃長霖為提調,參與編纂的有唐詠裳、關豫、金蓉鏡、顧家相、王國維、劉承乾等著名學者。1919年通志局解散,志稿散於各處。《浙江續通志稿》在清雍正朝《浙江通志》基礎上續修,自乾隆元年(1736年)始,止於宣統三年(1911年)。志書門類不僅延續了雍正朝《浙江通志》的分野、疆域、建置、形勝、城池、學校、公署、關梁、古蹟、海塘、田賦、戶口等門,又根據時代發展要求,新增大事記、教堂表、地方自治、地質等門類,共有志稿三百多冊,均未付梓。本書彙編了散存於浙江、上海、嘉興圖書館的《浙江續通志》大量的清稿、草稿、征訪稿,我們從中也得以一窺該志書的成書過程。本書對清末浙江地區的經濟、政治、文化、社會狀況分門別類進行了詳細地敘述,是研究這一時期浙江地區的重要文獻,具有極高的學術價值和史料價值。
