Victor Mair, Ph.D. in Chinese Literature from Harvard University, is a renowned sinologist and a professor in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a consultant at the Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. He also holds teaching positions at various universities including Kyoto University, the University of Hong Kong, Peking University, and Sichuan University. Proficient in Chinese, Japanese, Tibetan, and Sanskrit, he is regarded as one of the most pioneering scholars in contemporary Western sinology. With an extensive body of work, his research fields include Chinese language and literature, medieval history, Dunhuang studies, and more. For years, he has been dedicated to pushing boundaries, not only demonstrating the often-neglected importance of linguistics but also re-examining contemporary issues through linguistic approaches, exhibiting extraordinary distinctiveness.
