Cohen, born in 1934, is a professor at Wellesley College and a researcher at the Fairbank Center for East Asian Research at Harvard University. He is the author of China and Christianity: The Missionary Movement and the Growth of Chinese Antiforeignism, 1860-1870 (1963), Between Tradition and Modernity: Wang Tao and the Reform in Late Qing China (1974), Discovering History in China (1985), and History in Three Keys: The Boxers as Event, Experience, and Myth. About the Translator Lin Tongqi was born in Beijing in 1923. He entered the Department of Chemical Engineering at National Central University in Chongqing in 1941, and two years later transferred to the Department of History at Fudan University in Beibei, Chongqing. After graduating in 1946, he stayed on to teach. From 1949 onwards, he taught in the English Department of the PLA Foreign Languages Institute in Xiangshan, the western suburbs of Beijing, Zhangjiakou, and Luoyang for 35 years. In 1984, he went to the United States and served as an Associate at the Fairbank Center for East Asian Research, the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University, and the Harvard-Yenching Institute until his death in July 2015. His main research interests were contemporary Chinese and American academic thought. He published about 40 papers in Chinese and English, several translated books, and his representative monograph is The Collected Works of Lin Tongqi: A Quest for Humanism—An Analysis of the Thoughts of Distinguished Contemporary Chinese and American Scholars.

柯文，1934年生，美国韦尔斯利学院教授，哈佛大学费正清东亚研究中心研究员。著有《中国与基督教：传教运动与中国排外主义的发展（1860—1870）》（1963年）、《在传统与现代性之间：王韬与晚清改革》（1974年）、《在中国发现历史》（1985年）《历史三调：作为事件、经历和神话的义和团》等。

译者简介

林同奇，1923年生于北京。1941年入重庆中央大学化工系，两年后转入重庆北碚复旦大学历史系，1946年毕业后留校任教。1949年起先后在香山、北京西郊、张家口和洛阳的解放军外国语学院英语系任教，长达35年之久。1984年赴美，先后在哈佛大学费正清研究中心、哈佛大学东亚系和哈佛燕京学社任研究员(Associate)直至2015年7月去世。主要研究方向为当代中国与美国学术思想。发表中英文论文约40余篇，译著数本，专著代表作为《林同奇文集：人文寻求录——当代中美著名学者思想辨析》。
