Edward L. Shaughnessy, born in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, USA in 1952, is a native of Pennsylvania. He entered the University of Notre Dame in 1970, majoring in religious studies. After graduating in 1974, he studied in Taiwan for three years, studying the Three Mysteries (Sanxuan) under Aisin Gioro Yu Yun. Upon returning to the United States, he entered the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Stanford University, earning an M.A. in 1980 and a Ph.D. in 1983, with a dissertation titled 'The Composition of the Zhouyi' (I Ching). In 1985, he was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago, where he has taught ever since, being promoted to the Creel Distinguished Service Professor of Early Chinese History in 1997. His research areas include early Chinese cultural history, paleography, classical studies, and the Yijing (Book of Changes). His major works include: 'Sources of Western Zhou History: Inscribed Bronze Vessels' (1991), 'The I Ching: The First English Translation of the Mawangdui Silk Manuscript' (1996), 'Before Confucius: Studies in the Creation of the Chinese Classics' (1997), 'Ancient History: A Different View' (2005), 'Rewriting Early Chinese Texts' (2006). He also edited 'New Sources of Early Chinese History: A Guide to the Reading of Inscriptions and Manuscripts' (1997) and co-edited with Michael Loewe 'The Cambridge History of Ancient China' (1999).

　　夏含夷，（EdwardL.Shaughnessy）美国宾州人，1952年生于赛维克立镇（Sewickley）。1970年进入圣母大学，以宗教学为专业。1974年毕业后，曾在台湾留学三年，随爱新觉罗毓鋆学习三玄。回国以后，进入斯坦福大学研究所东亚语文系，1980年获硕士学位，1983年获博士学位，博士论文题目为“《周易》的编纂”。1985年受聘为芝加哥大学东亚语文系助教授，以后一直在芝加哥大学任教，1997年升为顾立雅（Creel）中国古史名誉教授。研究范围为中国上古文化史、古文字学、经学、《周易》，主要专著包括《西周史料：铜器铭文》（1991）、《易经：马王堆帛书易经第一英文翻译》（1996）、《孔子之前：中国经典的创造研究》（1997）、《古史异观》（2005），《重写中国古代文献》（2006），另外编辑了《中国古代新史料：阅读铭文与写本的指南》（1997）以及与鲁维一（MichaelLoewe）合编《剑桥中国古代史》（1999）。
