He specializes in using historical anthropology and fieldwork methods to study the social history of China and Southeast Asia. His works include *Practicing Kinship: Lineage and Descent in Late Imperial China* (2002), *Cold War Island: Quemoy on the Front Line* (2008), *The Art of Being Governed: Everyday Politics in Late Imperial China* (2018); edited volumes include *The China Question: Critical Insights into a Rising Power* (2018) and *A Companion to Chinese History* (2017). ◎ Translator’s Bio Zhong Yiming, Ph.D. candidate in the Department of History, Peking University. He received his bachelor's degree from the Department of History at Peking University and his master's degree from St. Cross College, University of Oxford. His research interests include modern Chinese history and the history of overseas Chinese. He has translated Robert Bickers’s *The Scramble for China: Foreign Devils in the Qing Empire, 1832–1914* (unpublished).

钟逸明,北京大学历史学系博士研究生。本科就读于北京大学历史学系,硕士就读于牛津大学圣十字学院。研究兴趣包括中国现代史和华人华侨史。曾翻译毕可思(Robert Bickers)著The Scramble for China:Foreign Devils in the Qing Empire,1832—1914(尚未出版)。
